Brief History

Federal Neuro -Psychiatric Hospital is tertiary mental health institution under the Federal Ministry Health Abuja, situated along Barnawa Road, opposite Shagari Federal Low Cost Houses Barnawa, Kaduna South. It was founded and opened in 1975 by the defunct north central state government with a 100 bed capacity. Later in 1996 the Federal Government of Nigeria took over the hospital from Kaduna state government, following the divisions by the national committee for the review of psychiatric care services under the chairmanship of Dr. Marinho. Today it is one of eight (8) full fledge psychiatric Hospitals in the federation, others are psychiatric hospitals Iselu Benin City, Maiduguri, Kware Sokoto, Enugu, Calabar, Abeokuta and Yaba Lagos. The hospital is accredited both by the West African College of Physician/National Post graduate Medical College of Nigeria Nursing and Midwifery council of Nigeria for residency training for Doctors and Post basic Psychiatric Nurses. It has a current bed capacity of 154, and this is expected to increase by 298 bed capacity on completion of male/female acute wards B and DRU ward B.

Brief History Of The Hospital

  • 1975: Establishment of the Hospital as Psychiatric Hospital Kakuri with 100 beds under Kaduna state government.
  • 1975: PROF. M.H.AHMED was the visiting consultant psychiatric. He paid twice weekly visits to the Hospital.
  • 1975 – 1976: another consultant psychiatric DR ISKANDAR (an Egyptian)
  • 1978: school of psychiatric nursing was established with MR UJORA as it principal.
  • 1988 – 1996: Dr I.S. BAKA, S.A LUBA,SHOROUNMU &YENGE Joined the Hospital.
  • 1989: DR YANGE left psychiatric Hospital as Medical officer to P.H ARO while DR SHORUNMU left for Australia after becoming Senior Registrar.
  • 1991: DR BAKA took over the mantle of leadership after DR ISKANDAR left as Medical Officer in charge.
  • 1991: The Hospital became Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital after the Federal Government took over 5 states owned Psychiatric Facilities in different part of the country, namely Enugu, Calabar, Maiduguri, Sokoto and Kaduna.
  • 1991: Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital became eight with addition to the existing 3 Federal Psychiatric Hospital (Yaba, Aro and Uselu)
  • 1996: Professor M.H AHMED became the first Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital Medical Director of Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital.
  • 1996: The Hospital became known as FEDERAL NEURO-PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL (F.N.P.H) Barnawa, Kaduna
  • 1996: DR G.T SULEMAN joined the senior of the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital (F.N.P.H) Barnawa, Kaduna.
  • 2001: Professor G.T.SULEMAN became the Medical Director Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital after he took over from Professor AHMED
  • 2002: DR S.O.ADEYEMI joined the services of the Hospital
  • 2004: DR A.B ADEPONLE joined the services of the Hospital.
  • 2007: DR. G.O.OJU joined the services of the Hospital.
  • 2007: DR ADEPONLE left the services of the Hospital.
  • 2008: DR N.W. EBITI joined the services of the Hospital.
  • 2008: DR NUHU F.T. (Consultant) joined as consultant Psychiatric.
  • 2009: N.U EKELE was the first trained Psychiatric consultant by the Hospital
  • 2010 - 2018: Dr. T L Sheikh became the Medical Director of Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital Kaduna.
  • 2018 – 2021: Prof A J Yusuf became the medical director of federal
  • 2022 till date: Dr. Aishatu Yusha’u Armiya’u became the medical director

Federal Neuropsychiatric hospital, Kaduna was founded in 1996 and became one of the 8 Neuropsychiatric Hospitals in Nigeria. The hospital has range of services incorporating continuum of care which takes into account both the quality and quantity of activity towards the realization of relevant SDG’s. We have the following service departments: Medical, Laboratory and Pharmacy services with outstanding quality and means to provide for the various needs of persons with a wide range of mental health challenges including vulnerable ones.
