Mental Health Experts Harp on Moderation as Nigerians Join Global Community For Christmas, New Year Festivities.

Nigerians have been admonished to cut their coats according to their clothes in the wake of current economic situation so as not to invite depression, anxiety and other psychological disorders into their lives all in the name of celebration. A duo of mental health experts at the Federal Neuro Psychiatric Hospital, Kaduna, Hajia Aisha Mohammed Badum, Head of  Clinical Psychology and Dr. Abdulkadir Usman Sambo, Senior Registrar  are of the opinion that impulsive buying or bandwagon expenditures will only spell doom for individuals, families and society beyond the yuletide season.

Hajia Aisha Mohammed Badum said Nigerians must not only be realistic with the dictates of the economic instability but equally be cognisant of more pressing demands such as family upkeep, children's school fees and possibly accommodation rent all lurking around the corner in the fast approaching new year. While cautioning citizens especially women against needless comparison, Head of Psychology Unit, advised individuals who cannot afford the luxury of time and money for long trips to make use of social media like video calls or zoom to connect with loved ones.

For Dr. Abdulkadir Usman Sambo, people need to prioritize their mental health in every situation especially during festivities for the predisposing factors for mental breakdown are already on the high side during such periods just as he advised everyone to desist from seeing the end of the year as the terminal expiration of plans , dreams or aspirations. He therefore charged Nigerians to always plan ahead early enough and cultivate the habit of monthly or quarterly self - assessment of personal targets which are different from societal expectations to avoid the mad rush for unrealistic aims associated with December.

While wishing Nigerians merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year in advance, the two mental health experts insist that moderation should be the guiding principle at this point in time when wants might be limitless but essential needs must be clearly identified.
